Keenan & Julie's
Rules Of Kayaking

We ask that anyone who makes use of the information on this website raise their right hand and speak out loud as follows:
  1. I promise that every time I go on the water I will wear a Personal Flotation Device. I understand that no matter how calm the water is or how good a swimmer I am, accidents happen, and I could drown. There are many comfortable PFDs on the market, and there is no excuse for not wearing one. I will not end up in a coffin with my loved ones weeping and mumbling to themselves "if only s/he had worn a life jacket."

  2. I promise that every time I take advantage of what a particular community has to offer me as a paddler, I will try to ensure that said community benefits from my presence. If I need gas, I will fill up there. If I need to buy some bottled water or ice cream, I will buy it there. And if I get a chance, I will let local people know that I enjoyed kayaking in their community and that I appreciated the facilities that were available to me.

  3. I promise to do my utmost to represent all kayakers through my enthusiasm for the sport, respect for the environment, and courteous manner of interacting with those I meet along the way. I will always offer assistance to other paddlers, and even powerboat operators if they need it. I know that one day I could be the one who needs help.

  4. When driving a vehicle with a kayak mounted on top, I will always wave or make a related friendly gesture to other kayakers that I encounter on the way. If I had a particularly good day, I will wave to canoeists as well. When I notice other drivers or pedestrians staring at my boat in wonderment, I will smile warmly and say "you should try it."
